The Laura Bassi Scholarship

The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. The scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded thrice per annum: December, April, and August. All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of their employment. There are no institutional, departmental, or national restrictions.

Call for Papers from French Historical Studies: Music and French History/La musique et l’histoire française

The editors of French Historical Studies seek articles for a special issue on music in the Francophone world to appear in 2022.

The history of the music of France has traditionally been studied as a separate category without the same robust interest as other cultural artifacts such as film and literature. More recent scholarship illuminates the place of music in French society and suggests that more work should be done to sketch out the particular place of music in all its forms in French history.

This special issue of French Historical Studies proposes to take stock of and advance this historiographical renewal. What can the production and consumption of music tell us about the shifting nature of French identity and the relationships among various constituencies in French history?

We seek a wide range of approaches to reflect the variety of recent scholarship, which includes music from outside the Hexagon. We define music in the most inclusive way to cover art music, religious music, and popular music, as well as its producers, interlocutors, and audiences.

We encourage submissions that assess the changing spaces of musical production, development of music industries, variations in media (sound recording, video, and file sharing as examples), the conditions of circulation. Music remains ubiquitous today in France, but we should look beyond the notion of sonic wallpaper and understand the particular meanings ascribed to music throughout French history. What did music mean to medieval and prerevolutionary listeners, and whom was it for? How did technological changes transform the meaning of music? Does music serve as a form of citizenship for the French?

Submissions on all periods, from medieval to contemporary, are welcome. Transnational perspectives that look at music within global and connected histories are particularly encouraged, but there should be a Francophone aspect to that history to connect it with the journal’s scholarly interests. The journal is also interested in multimedia and digital opportunities for journal articles.

Articles may be either in English or in French but must in either case conform to French Historical Studies style and must be accompanied by 150-word abstracts in both French and English. Manuscripts should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words. For any illustrations, musical scores, and audio clips, authors must obtain written permission for both print and online publication from the relevant persons or institutions.

Les éditrices de French Historical Studies lancent un appel à articles pour un numéro spécial sur la musique, à paraître en 2022.

L’histoire de la musique a généralement été étudiée comme une catégorie à part. Elle n’a pas suscité le même intérêt parmi les historien(ne)s que d’autres objets culturels tels que les films ou la littérature. L’historiographie la plus récente éclaire la place de la musique dans la société française et suggère qu’il reste encore beaucoup à faire pour constituer un ensemble de connaissances historiques sur son rôle dans l’histoire.

Ce numéro spécial de FHS voudrait faire le bilan de nos savoirs et les orienter vers des pistes de recherche nouvelles. Qu’est-ce que la production et la consommation de la musique nous disent de la nature évolutive de l’identité française et des relations entre ses divers constituants ?

Nous souhaitons que ce numéro de FHS reflète la grande variété des usages historiographiques de la musique, en France mais aussi dans le monde francophone. Notre conception de la musique embrasse une diversité de genres pour couvrir la musique populaire, classique ou religieuse, mais aussi ses producteurs et productrices, ses praticien(ne)s et ses différents publics.

Les propositions devront prêter attention aux différents espaces de la production musicale, au développement des industries de la musique, aux divers médias (enregistrement sonore ou vidéo, partage de fichiers, etc.) et aux conditions de leur circulation. La musique reste omniprésente dans la France d’aujourd’hui, mais il nous faut regarder au-delà de la musique d’ambiance et comprendre la signification particulière attribuée à la musique tout au long de l’histoire française. Que signifiait la musique pour les personnes au Moyen Age ou dans la France pré-révolutionnaire, et à qui était-elle destinée ? Comment les changements technologiques ont-ils transformé le sens de la musique ? La musique renvoie-t-elle à une forme de citoyenneté pour les Français(es) ?

Toutes les périodes de l’histoire entrent dans notre champ d’investigation, de l’époque médiévale à nos jours. Les perspectives transnationales, qui s’intéressent à la place de la musique au sein d’une histoire globale et connectée, sont particulièrement encouragées, à condition qu’elles intègrent une dimension francophone. FHS est également attentif aux possibilités d’intégrer des dimensions multimédia ou numériques aux articles.

The French Teachers Branch of the Modern Language Teachers Association of Queensland invites you to the 2020 Conference of the Federation of Associations of Teachers of French in Australia  

Making Connections: Engaging 21st Century Learners of French in the Pacific 

3rd – 5th July 2020 –  Emmanuel College, University of Queensland, Brisbane

How do we and how can we teach French here and now in ways which engage diverse groups of learners?   

This conference invites reflection on the theme of engaging learners of French in the contexts in which we teach. We invite proposals for presentations and workshops on:

  •        Connecting with French speaking communities (in our local context or elsewhere) 
  •        Teaching French as a regional language of the Pacific 
  •        Retention; attrition; barriers and enablers to participation in language education 
  •        Learner motivation 
  •        Inclusivity and teaching diverse groups of learners 
  •        Engaging non-traditional learners  
  •        Work-Integrated learning 
  •        Teaching French in an age of technology 

Please note that although our inspiration is the Australian curriculum, we are interested to hear about projects carried out in other contexts which relate to the theme of learner engagement 

The conference organizing committee invites proposals for: 

Papers (20 minutes + 10 minutes of questions) 

  •        Individual presentations of research or practice + 10 minutes for questions 
  •        Panels of three papers dealing with the same theme

Extended deadline: ASFS/AJFS Postgraduate Prize

A prize of $500 will be awarded for the best article (4,000-6,000 words inc. notes) by a postgraduate student on any aspect of French Studies (except French language studies). The prize will be awarded at the annual ASFS Conference in Sydney https://australiansocietyforfrenchstudies.com/events/asfs-conference/ in December 2019, and the winning article will be published in a ‘miscellaneous’ issue of AJFS.

Applicants must be enrolled in a research higher degree at an Australian university and be a member of ASFS. Previous prize recipients are not eligible to submit an article. Articles may be written in English or French and must be presented according to AJFS style guidelines (see http://online.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/loi/ajfs or http://artsonline.monash.edu.au/australian-journal-french-studies/. They will be assessed by a joint ASFS/AJFS judging committee which may call upon relevant expertise in its deliberations.

The deadline for submissions for the prize is 15 August 2019. The winner will be announced in December 2019.

Video contest: Francophonie in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific Commission of the FIPF is organising a video contest on Francophonie for French learners in the Asia-Pacific region. Candidates will have to create a short video on the Francophone presence in their respective countries. Participate, have fun and win great prizes thanks to our sponsors!

Conditions for participation
The candidate must be a French learner (from the age of 15, at a senior high school or university) in one of the Asia-Pacific countries. Professionals or people with French as their mother tongue cannot participate. There are 2 categories: a) High school students); b) University students

How to participate

  • Create a video of 3 minutes maximum, format mp4 on the topic of the Francophone presence in your country. You can talk about the Francophonie in your area or city if you prefer. You can use all kinds of media (photos, interviews, writing, sound effects, music, sound …). The video must be in French from beginning to end.
  • Upload the video on YouTube and publish it in “unlisted” mode. Each video must be clearly labelled with the name, surname, age, and country of the candidate.
  • Fill in the online entry form with the URL of your video and submit the form: https://forms.gle/xCG5WkWCBrPGX6Dk7
  • Complete the agreement sheet (parental agreement for participants under 18 years) for the dissemination of photos (photos, videos, sound recordings …) on various communication media. Entering the contest is an acceptance of the rules in their entirety.

  • The winning videos will be broadcasted at the International symposium on French Language Education in Asia-Pacific to be held in Mongolia from September 19 to 20, 2019.

  • The jury is made up of different French teachers from Asia Pacific countries and the executive committee of the CAP.
  • The criteria will be based on: language, pronunciation, content, and creativity.

Parler la terre

La terre nous unit tous. Parler la terre, c’est parler de soi-même, c’est parler de l’Autre, c’est parler de l’identité, de l’environnement, de la vie à tous les sens du mot. La terre permet l’existence des êtres humains, elle crée leurs cultures, fonde leurs imaginaires, complique leurs relations, fait et parfois défait leurs rêves. Comment représente-on la terre dans la littérature, dans l’art contemporain, dans le cinéma ? Comment la terre figure-t-elle dans la théorie postmoderne et post- coloniale, dans les théories du genre, et dans les études sociales et culturelles ? Comme le colloque 2020 aura lieu à l’Université du Nebraska-Lincoln, une institution « land grant, » située dans un état où l’agriculture dicte souvent l’économie et les tendances politiques, il nous semble opportun de considérer le rôle de la terre dans la production culturelle contemporaine d’expression française.

Nous invitons des propositions de communication dans les domaines des littératures d’expression française, de la théorie littéraire, de l’histoire, des études culturelles et/ou postcoloniales, des études de genre, de la traduction, des arts tels que la musique, la danse, le cinéma, la photographie, et la bande dessinée.

En plus de propositions individuelles, nous encourageons vivement la soumission de panels complets.

Speaking the Earth

The earth unites us all. To speak of the earth is to speak of oneself, of the “Other,” of identity, of the environment, of life in every sense of the word. The earth allows human beings to exist, it creates our cultures, founds our imaginaries, complicates our relationships, fulfills and sometimes frustrates our dreams. How is the earth or land represented in literature, in contemporary art, and in film? How does the earth factor into postmodern and postcolonial theories, gender theories, and cultural studies? As the 2020 colloquium will take place at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a land grant institution in a state in which agriculture frequently influences the economy and consequently the political situation and political tendencies, it seems appropriate to consider the role of the earth/land in contemporary cultural production of French expression.

We invite paper proposals in the following fields: literatures of French expression, literary theory, cultural studies, history, gender and postcolonial studies, translation, and art, including music, dance, film studies, photography, and the graphic novel.

In addition to individual proposals, we encourage the submission of complete panel proposals.

The organizing committee will welcome particularly, but not exclusively, proposals addressing the following themes:

  • Place and identity
  • Natural and urban spaces
  • Borders, migration, exile
  • Folklore, mythology, legends, and origin stories
  • Nation, nationality, nationalism
