ASFS members may be eligible to apply for the following grants to support their research.

Australian Society for French Studies Grants

Colin Nettelbeck Prize

In honour of founding Australian Society for French Studies member, Emeritus Professor Colin Nettelbeck, and his long-term contributions to the support of postgraduates in French Studies, the ASFS announces a new prize for postgraduate or precariously-employed early career researcher members of the Society. The Colin Nettelbeck Prize is designed to support research and travel costs with funds of up to $1000 for a French Studies-related project.

ASFS/AJFS Postgraduate Prize

Each year, The Australian Society for French Studies and the Australian Journal of French Studies sponsor the ASFS/AJFS Postgraduate Prize. A prize of $500 is awarded for the best article by a postgraduate student on any aspect of French Studies (except French language studies). The prize is awarded at the annual conference of ASFS, and the winning article is published in a ‘miscellaneous’ issue of AJFS.

Postgraduate members of the ASFS are eligible for free registration for the ASFS annual conference.

School Liaison and Community Outreach Fund

The aim of the School Liaison and Community Outreach Fund is to support the learning of the French language and francophone cultures and to contribute to the growth and vitality of French-speaking communities across Australia. The Australian Society for French Studies, with support from the Embassy of France in Australia, will make up to two annual awards of $500 to support projects promoting French teaching in schools and fostering collaborative exchanges with community organisations.

Embassy of France in Australia Grants

Australia-France Collaborative Research Program

The Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the Embassy of France in Australia jointly administer the Social Science Collaborative Research Program. This research funding program is intended to foster and reinforce social science collaboration between Australia and France.

Créative France Australia Short Program Fund

The Créative France Australia Short Program Fund supports the establishment of short-term programs in the form of summer (or winter) schools co-organised by French and Australian tertiary education institutions, bringing together students from both countries around a theme of common interest.

Nicolas Baudin Internships in France Initiative

The Nicolas Baudin “Internships in France” initiative offers students, including PhD candidates, from participating Australian universities the opportunity to undertake a research internship at a French host university in collaboration with an industry partner.

Nicolas Baudin Travel Grant

The Nicolas Baudin Travel Grant is designed to encourage Australian students, including PhD candidates, to undertake study, research or professional development in France. Frequently asked questions are answered here.

Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards

The Discovery Early Career Research Awards (DECRA) scheme provides focused research support for early career researchers (within five years of the award of their PhD) in both teaching and research, and research-only positions.

Discovery Indigenous Scheme

The Discovery Indigenous scheme provides grant funding to support research projects led by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researcher.

Discovery Projects

The Discovery Projects scheme provides grant funding to support research projects that may be undertaken by individual researchers or research teams.

Future Fellowships

Future Fellowships provide four-year fellowships to outstanding Australian mid-career researchers to undertake high quality research in areas of national and international benefit.

Laureate Fellowships

Open to applications from the highest-quality researchers of international repute, the Australian Laureate Fellowships provide project funding in addition to a salary supplement and salary-related (on-cost) support.

Linkage Projects

The Linkage Program promotes national and international research partnerships between researchers and business, industry, community organisations and other publicly funded research agencies.

Grants from Other Organisations

AFRAN (Australian-French Association for Research and Innovation) Grants

The Australian-French Association for Research and Innovation (AFRAN) Inc. actively promotes the development of cooperation between France and Australia in the areas of research and innovation. Australian researchers in relevant fields can join for free and they offer a number of funding schemes.

Australian Government Research Training Program

The Australian Government’s Research Training Program has replaced the Australian Postgraduate Award and administers scholarships for postgraduates to pursue a Higher Degree by Research (HDR), including PhDs. Applications are made through individual universities.

Society for French Studies Grants

The ASFS’ partner association in the UK, the Society for French Studies, offers a number of funding possibilities, including an annual Visiting Fellow scheme for international researchers that has been held by ASFS members in the past.
