“Reading / Translating Proust“
In this seminar, Brian Nelson will offer reflections on his experience as co-editor and contributing translator of the new, seven-volume Oxford edition / translation of Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time: challenges (Proust’s famous long sentences, etc.), particular problems (translating humour, linguistic play, etc.), general issues (‘foreignisation’, etc.), previous translations (Scott Moncrieff, Terence Kilmartin, Lydia Davis, James Grieve).
Presenter
Brian Nelson (Professor Emeritus of French at Monash University) is best known for his numerous translations and critical studies of the novels of Emile Zola. He won the 2015 New South Wales Premier’s Prize for Translation. His critical works include Emile Zola: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford, 2020) and The Cambridge Introduction to French Literature (Cambridge, 2015). His translation of The Swann Way by Marcel Proust was published (in Oxford World’s Classics) in 2023.
