Jarrod Hayes AJFS Prize
Call for submissions 2025
The Australian Society for French Studies and the Australian Journal of French Studies are pleased to invite submissions for the annual co-sponsored Jarrod Hayes AJFS Prize.
This prize honours the memory and recognises the enduring influence of Jarrod Hayes on the French Studies community, including its postgraduate and early career members, in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and beyond.
A prize of AU$800 will be awarded to the best article (5,000 to 6,500 words including notes) on any aspect of French Studies (except French language Studies) by a postgraduate student.
The winner will be announced at the ASFS annual conference, and the winning essay will be submitted to peer-review and potential publication in the Australian Journal of French Studies.
Applicants must be enrolled in a higher degree by research programme at an Australian or New Zealand university and be a member of the ASFS. Previous prize recipients are not eligible to submit an article. Articles may be written in English or French and must be presented according to the Australian Journal of French Studies Style Guide. Submissions are assessed by a joint ASFS/AJFS judging committee, which may call upon relevant expertise in its deliberations.
We invite eligible postgraduates to submit their essay by Friday, 17 October 2025. Please send your anonymised essay as a Word document to the ASFS’s Postgraduate Officer, Beth Kearney (b.kearney@uq.edu.au). Please ensure that the email contains the following details: your full name, the institution in which you are enrolled, the title of your research programme, and the name of your research supervisors.
All inquiries may be directed to the Postgraduate Officer.
